Advice or Code to remove link in WP top level menu

I want a simple and easy way to remove the links from all the top level items in a Wordpress navigation menu so that a visitor can't click it - it will just show all the child pages.
I'm using Wordpress 3.01 (and yes, I know I could use the Custom Menu option, but the theme I'm using doesn't support it) - Tags:
