A Dynamic Student Project Management System

System Requirements

The Department of Computing and Engineering has projects on just about every programme it offers at undergraduate and postgraduate level. These projects are carried out to a specific schedule and are supervised individually by an allocated supervisor. Each project has the same lifecycle:

1. start of project and allocation of supervisor (done by the project tutor)
2. 1st review (where three documents have to be submitted, namely Terms of Reference, project schedule, gantt chart and project log – all in file format)
3. 2nd review (Terms of Reference, schedule, Gantt, project log, research chapter and dissertation table of contents)
4. submission (submission of the dissertation)

Students need to be able to log into the system to submit/upload the relevant documentation for the reviews and for the submission and overwrite them if they want to replace a submitted document with an updated one. But they should not be allowed to change them once the deadline has passed.

Supervisors should be able to log in to see the students they are supervising, their respective schedule (the dates of the project start, first review, second review and final submission date) and the documents that student has uploaded.

Students, supervisors and the tutor should be able to see the documents relating to them in the system as well as the schedule specifying when the start date, the review dates and the submission date is.

The project tutor should be able to log in to register new students for the project and allocate supervisors as well as setting the dates for the start, the reviews and the submission dates.


It is a requirement that the system should be implemented using HTML, PHP, MySQL,JavaScript .

Your submission should also include:

1. A description of the tools and technologies you have employed in the development of your system.
2. A detailed evaluation of the system you have developed.
3. A evaluation and description of your database design.
4. A system user guide including passwords and usernames if applicable.

Three accounts MUST be created for the project tutor with username “tutor” and a password of “tutor” and a student account with a username of “student” and a password of “student” as well as a supervisor account with username “supervisor” and password “supervisor”. You should populate your system with some sample data to show its functionality and should also provide with a way of registering new additional students and supervisors either through a self-registration or tutor managed registration facility.
