Widget-based Homepage

PHASE I
- Ads; Leaderboard, Tower and Tile, should each have ability to rotate
three-four ads.

- Site Search
- Navigation Menu, consisting of Home and links to supporting pages for the
seven print pubs, on which stories are placed but not necessarily allowing
for user content

- User Authentication, to support a commenting system during Phase 1, and
site customizations following the conclusion of future phases. Site visitors
who register with the site and sign into the user authentication system will
have the ability to comment on and/or rate content (blogs and stories).

- Feature Story widget, consisting of a content area that displays the
featured story of the day, plus three or more headlines. Features are
assigned, edited and uploaded by us (the editors).

- Blogs Widget, displaying three latest blog posts and link to more blogs,
which can be viewed/searched by author, most recent posted, category, and/or
tags. Bloggers should be able to post directly to the site. We intend to
have 7-10 dedicated bloggers to the site.

PHASE II
- Homepage Customizability, allowing registered users to modify with
selected backgrounds/themes/colors; and move and eliminate widgets. Based on
BBC.co.uk model.

- Ticker, linking to top stories, blogs and advertisements. Based on Reuters
model.

- Blog Widget customizability, allowing registered users to filter only the
blogs of their preference based on author, category, etc.

- Map Widget, linking to a restaurant directory with content populated by
us. Site visitors have ability to search for restaurants based on location,
cuisine, and price range. The map will display points of interest that when
scrolled over delivers a field that provides restaurant name, address, phone
number, link to website, and short description that links to full review,
menu, pictures, user comments and ratings. Based on model developed by
LabPixies for iGoogle.

News Widget, featuring six external feeds of headlines. First should be
mixed feed-top headline from the five other feeds. The five others should be
the top five headlines from local, national and world news sources. Also
based on model developed by LabPixies for iGoogle.

- Weather Widget, defaulting to location of user's IP address. Based on
model from BBC.co.uk , which defaults 3-day forecast and offers link to
7-day forecast.

- Traffic Widget, from external feed
- Surf Report Widget, possibly fed by live footage provided by us.
- Calendar, searchable by date and type of event. This should allow for user
submissions.
- Supporting pages dedicated to magazines should have additional static ads,
and more dynamic functions (ie video, podcast).

Obviously, our main design influences are iGoogle and BBC.co.uk We like the
commenting abilities on digg.com and HuffingtonPost. For the magazine pages
our main influence is TMagazine's website (a supplement to New York Times:
