I have a custom CMS that is working for one of my sites (http://shorten-it.com/1333/). I have the main update/DB feeding another two sites. Based on *identifiers. -sole, -nude..
The site works like this, and I want the same in new. I upload new pictures of 1 particular celeb in FTP temp folder. I then pull up my webadmin in browser. Once all is uploaded, I find existing celeb name (if already have on site) and then click, scroll down to see uploaded content, click save.
It auto thumbs images. Updates celeb pages. New pictures have a different colored border than archived (after 24 hours). New celebrities (those I do not have on site) work similar.
I can upload as many celebrities as I want, but only 28 show as updated every 24 hours. This allows me to schedule my updates in advance for when I am out of town. It auto updates per cron at 3AM.
I just had a new design done, and I am happy with it. So you are basically building a better CMS than the current. It has some bottlenecks, and memory and resource issues from what I have been told. Plus is apparently not easy to modify or fix things.
You are taking the existing benefits, and features, and improving on them. You are not reinventing the wheel.
Furthermore, I have a second part that needs to go with this site.
