Description: |
I've been put in charge of creating a master Vacation home rental site from the inventory of four different companies in the area. My original thought was to get all sites domains on the same server so they can share the same MySQL database w/out remote access concerns, and that will work for two of the four companies, but the other two have complicated setups that would require recoding their entire site to work with the open source code I'm using as a base for this (http://freerealty.rwcinc.net/). One of the sites (www.sunrayinc.com) is already sharing the database of the master site (www.sunrivervacations.com) with the other one coming soon.
I've talked to the developers of the other two rental sites, and they've both setup data dumps for me to be able to use. One company used XML dumped from their ASP/M$SQL/.Net-driven site, the other a CSV dump from their ColdFusion/Sybase-driven site. Both of those files are enclosed in the attached file. The developers of the ColdFusion site said they'd customize that output however I need it, but the XML file from the other company is going to have to stay that way, they say.
Basically, I'll need the data from both of these sources pulled on a daily basis, and dumped into the database on the master site (schema in the attached zip file). Field names will need to be matched up (and I will give you details on that) and some minor tweaking will need to be done. I envision this running on a nightly cron job or something similar (both of the attached data files are web accessible). New homes from each of the companies will need to be added, and existing homes from each of the companies will need to be updated. They will also be assigned a specific agent/owner ID so that they are assigned appropriately to the specific company.
What I will also need is a way to get images for these homes from their respective sites uploaded into the database (as I use database storage for the images currently). The filenames are in each of their respective data dumps. It would certainly make the shared site far easier if every image was in the database, pulled from each site and stored there (as some of the other sites are pretty slow while this is on a meatier server), but I'm open to you editing the property viewing code PHP file if it's just easier to have logic in there that displays the images differently, depending on the company.
Basically, I just want this all to work. Whomever I use for this project will probably also be used on future projects, as I might need some coding help later in this project. PHP expert I am not, but I know enough to get by and know what's possible and what's not.
If you have any questions or if there's something I'm not entirely clear on, please reply/post and I'll try to clear things up as much as I can. Additional Info (Added 4/3/2006 at 14:35 EST)...BTW: I know my feedback is non-existant, but I didn't know about this site until recently. So you know who I am, I'm a freelance geek for www.orty.com, blogger at utterlyboring.com, the IT Director at Sunray Vacation Rentals (www.sunrayinc.com) as well as Discover Sunriver Vacation Rentals (www.discoversunriver.com), and I wear a size 10 shoe [grin]. I've done a bunch of online transcations before (heatware references under "orty", ebay under "orty.com"), just not in this realm. I'm posting here because my usual geek for this type of thing is not available, and I'm trying to get another contact going.
If you're not comfortable dealing with a newbie, I'm completly understand. But you can contact me privately if you have any concerns.

| Your move to data dumps is a good choice. Familiar with XML/CSV parsing, PHP/MySQL systems and all that jazz. Loads of references (live working sites) if you'd like to review. See pmb please.
